L’église Saint-Lambert de style roman est située au cœur de l’ensemble seigneurial. A l’origine c’était une chapelle castrale construite au début du 12e siècle pour le seul usage du seigneur et de ses proches. Elle était desservie par les moines bénédictins du prieuré de Saint-Marcel-lès-Sauzet rattaché à Cluny en 1037. Les villageois devaient fréquenter l’église du prieuré considérée comme église paroissiale.

La construction est très sobre avec une nef unique. En 1672 une chapelle abritant une confrérie de Pénitents* a été adjointe au sud. Initialement cette chapelle ne communiquait pas avec l’église. Afin de permettre des offices communs, une ouverture sous forme de grand arceau fut réalisée ultérieurement.

L’entrée est très en contre-bas du niveau de la place car celle-ci a été créée sur les gravats des nombreuses habitations ruinées et, au début des années 1970, sur ceux résultant de l’arasement de la pointe du rocher calcaire.

Le clocher au-dessus du chœur a été détruit lors des guerres de religion, reconstruit au 17e siècle puis démoli par décision du conseil municipal en 1935. Il ne restait alors que le clocher de la chapelle des Pénitents qui fut lui-même remplacé par le clocher actuel après la seconde guerre mondiale.

*nom donné aux membres de certaines confréries laïques qui font pénitence et portent un costume spécial comportant notamment un capuchon couvrant leur tête et les épaules

Remarquer l’orientation différente des clochers sur l’ancienne photo et sur la nouvelle après restauration.

Les pénitents avaient leurs propres offices et leurs propres objets liturgiques. En 1697 ils ont obtenu l’autorisation d’ensevelir leurs membres dans la chapelle.

Supprimée à la révolution, la confrérie a été remplacée par une «fabrique» au 19e siècle.

A l’intérieur on peut admirer un tableau du 17e siècle représentant une Vierge des sept douleurs.

The roman style church of Saint-Lambert is located in the heart of the seigniorial complex. It was originally a castral chapel built at the beginning of the 12th century for the sole use of the lord and his family. It was served by the benedictine monks of the priory of Saint-Marcel-lès-Sauzet which was attached to Cluny in 1037. The villagers had to attend the priory church which was considered as a parish church.

The building is very simple with a single nave. In 1672 a chapel housing a brotherhood of Penitents* was added to the south. Initially this chapel did not communicate with the church. In order to allow joint offices, an opening in the form of a large arch was made later.

The entrance is very much below the level of the square, as it was created in the early 1970s on the rubble coming from the many ruined houses and from the levelling of the emerging limestone rock.

The bell tower above the choir was destroyed during the Wars of Religion, rebuilt in the 17th century and then demolished by decision of the town council in 1935. Only the bell tower of the Penitents chapel remained, which was itself replaced by the present bell tower after the Second World War.

*The name of Penitents is given to the members of secular brotherhoods doing penance and wearing a special dress including a hood covering the head and the shoulders.

Note the different orientation of the steeples on the old photo and on the new one after restoration.

The Penitents had their own offices and their own liturgical objects. In 1697 they obtained permission to bury their members in the chapel.

Suppressed during the Revolution, the brotherhood was replaced by a "fabrique" in the 19th century.

Inside, a 17th century painting of the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows can be admired.
