6-Four Banal

Derrière ce mur, se trouvait «le four banal» du village où les habitants devaient faire cuire leur pain moyennant un impôt dû au seigneur: le ban.

Sous le régime féodal, le mot «banal» (de ban: proclamation officielle…), ici appliqué au four, désignait à la fois la propriété du seigneur et l’obligation faite à ses sujets d’utiliser cet équipement moyennant redevances. Le seigneur devait en contrepartie entretenir le four et le chemin qui y conduisait. Il en était de même pour les autres banalités telles que le moulin et le pressoir.

A Sauzet les banalités étaient tombées en désuétude au début du 17e siècle (les consuls recrutaient alors directement un meunier et un boulanger pour la communauté). Lorsque les Grimaldi devinrent ducs du Valentinois (1642), ils voulurent rétablir ces taxes, les habitants protestèrent en allant faire  moudre leur grain et cuire leur pain hors les murs du village.

D’une façon générale, les «bans» disparurent à la révolution avec les privilèges seigneuriaux.

Behind this wall was the village's “banal oven” where the inhabitants had to bake their bread in return for a tax due to the lord: the ban.
Under the feudal regime, the banal oven (comes from the ban: official proclamation…) was the lord’s property and his subjects had to use this oven and pay a rental charge. The lord in return had to maintain the oven and the road that led to it, as he had also to maintain the mill and the press.

In Sauzet the “banalités”(taxes) had fallen into disuse at the beginning of the 17th century (the consuls then directly recruited a miller and a baker for the community). When the Grimaldis became dukes of the Valentinois (1642), they wanted to re-establish these taxes, the inhabitants protested by going to have their grain ground and their bread baked outside the village walls.

Generally speaking, the "bans" disappeared during the revolution with the seigneurial privileges.
